Apple will pay artists more to offer spatial audio versions on Apple Music

Starting this month, Apple will pay artists additional royalties if they have spatial audio versions on Apple Music, according to multiple reports.

According to a report from 9to5Mac, the company will pay an additional royalty of up to 10% if all of an artist’s songs are spatial audio. The extra money doesn’t depend on users playing the spatial audio version, though.

In notes sent to artists (via Music Business Worldwide), the additional cost is calculated as a ratio of space-available versions to non-space-available versions.

“The proportional share of space-available games will be calculated using a factor of 1.1, while the proportional share of non-space-available games will continue to use a factor of 1,” the note reads. “This change is not only about rewarding higher quality content; To ensure artists are compensated for the time and investment they put into Spatial remixes.”

The note also mentioned that since Apple launched Spatial Audio in 2021, the number of songs in the format has increased by 5,000%, but did not specify the exact number.

In December, Bloomberg reported that Apple planned to introduce incentives to encourage artists to add songs mixed using Dolby Atmos technology to Apple Music.

Apple Music’s competitors include Amazon Prime Music, Tidal and Deezer all offer space services. Although Spotify has been talking about releasing a Hi-Fi version for a few years, it has not officially launched yet.

Apple’s announcement comes as the European Union pushes for rules to ensure music streaming services better distribute revenue to artists. The company did not immediately comment on the matter.

Last year, Spotify changed its royalty rules so that only songs that had been played more than 1,000 times in the past 12 months were eligible for payment.
