Reviews of Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra
Samsung’s 2024 flagship has landed. The S24 Ultra has a new titanium frame, an improved telephoto camera, and is packed with new AI smarts and features. It’s also more expensive than ever.
However, this year’s S23 series features artificial intelligence functions rather than hardware. Artificial intelligence tools span text and translation, photography and search. Many of the AI features are already available from other services like ChatGPT and Bard, but they’re all shoehorned into the base tier of the S24 series, so you can summarize, auto-format, spell-check, or Translate your letters on the go. (Obviously, the transcription is also very impressive, but that’s probably why I’m excited as a reporter.)
Factor in the faster chip, brighter display, and longer battery life, and the S24 Ultra makes the case for an upgrade. It’s just an expensive one.

This is due to anti-competition concerns in the EU.
Amazon and iRobot, the maker of the Roomba vacuum cleaner line, have just announced they are abandoning their proposed merger. They announced the potential acquisition back in August 2022, and in November the European Commission raised formal concerns about its potential impact on competition. The companies made no mention of a formal investigation in their announcements. Now that the deal has not been completed, iRobot said it will lay off about 350 employees, accounting for 31% of the company’s total employees. iRobot founder, CEO and Chairman of the Board Colin Angle will also resign as Chairman and CEO.

It went offline an hour after going online.
Rocksteady’s new third-person action shooter “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” It was taken offline just an hour after launch as players encountered a strange bug that immediately crashed the game. It locks players out of all story missions, including the tutorial, in a race to reach the end credits. This also makes it impossible to earn trophies and achievements, but probably the biggest problem is the inability to play any of the $70 games. The developer said it is working on fixes.

When the sun’s direction changes, the solar panels recharge.
Japan’s lunar lander has restored power nine days after landing on the lunar surface nearly upside down and shut down. JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) said the change in the sun’s position allowed the solar panels to receive light and charge the detector’s batteries, so JAXA could re-establish communications. Regardless, the mission was considered a success as the main goal was a precise landing. It did, hitting its target just 55 meters (180 feet) away. Just… going the wrong way.

Yes, it’s 2024. Why do you ask about this?
Back on Earth, in 2022, Japan’s Digital Affairs Minister Taro Kono urged government agencies to stop asking companies to submit information about outdated physical media formats. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) was one of the first countries to make this change. Kono’s staff found approximately 1,900 agreements from various government agencies that still require floppy disks, CD-ROMs and even (!) minidiscs.
