Amazon accused of using artificial intelligence to ‘copy voices’ of actors in Road House remake
Amazon sued by writer of original 1989 Patrick Swayze movie Roadhouse Regarding alleged copyright infringement in film remakes, Los Angeles Times Reported. Screenwriter R. Lance Hill has accused Amazon and MGM Studios of using artificial intelligence to clone actors’ voices in a new production in order to complete it before copyrights expire.
Hill said he filed a petition with the U.S. Copyright Office in November 2021 to reclaim rights to his original script, which formed the basis of the new film. At the time, the rights were owned by Amazon Studios as part of the MGM acquisition, but were expected to expire in November 2023. Hill claims those rights will revert to him once that happens.
According to the lawsuit, Amazon Studios was eager to move forward with the project anyway in order to complete it before the copyright deadline. Hill claims Amazon is using artificial intelligence to “replicate” the voices of actors in the 2024 remake, which is hampered by a cast strike. Such use violates the terms of agreements between the union and major studios, including Amazon.
This claim is further complicated by the fact that Hill signed a “work-for-hire” deal with original producer United Artists. This effectively means that the studio that employs the author becomes both the owner and copyright holder of the work. However, Hill dismissed this, calling it “boilerplate” commonly used in contracts.
The lawsuit seeks to block the release of the film, which is set to premiere at SXSW on March 8 and then (controversially) stream directly on Prime Video on March 21.
An Amazon spokesman denied the claims edge “The studio specifically instructed the filmmakers not to use artificial intelligence in this film.” If artificial intelligence was used, it was only used in early versions of the film, it added. Later, the filmmakers were told to remove any “AI or non-SAG AFTRA actors” from the final version. It added that the other allegations were “absolutely false” and that it believed its copyright to the original Roadhouse Not yet expired.
