Musk’s X seizes Indian accounts, tweets to comply with order
X, formerly known as Twitter, said on Wednesday it would withhold specific accounts and posts in India in response to an executive order issued by the Indian government, a move it disagreed with. X said the company faces “potential penalties including substantial fines and jail time” if it fails to comply with the executive order.
X’s global government affairs department said legal restrictions prevented it from issuing executive orders, but “we believe making these orders public is critical to promote transparency.” X recommended that it file a writ appeal challenging the Indian government’s lockdown orders – which is a “pending” currency and users affected by the order have been notified.
X warns: “A lack of disclosure can lead to a lack of accountability and arbitrary decision-making.”
X The revelation came after New Delhi ordered the temporary blocking of around 177 accounts and posts related to the country’s farmers’ protests. This year, authorities blocked social media accounts ahead of protests where farmers were demanding higher minimum support prices for agricultural products.
India is one of the key markets for global technology companies. Revised IT rules in the South Asian market give New Delhi greater power to force the country’s online services to comply.

The order to block the Twitter account of the farm leader was issued in advance. There is no transparency or natural justice in this form of pre-censorship.
Twitter, under new ownership, will no longer reveal the URL to the Lumen database, reducing transparency. It also lost a Karnataka High Court case that relied on divine right (rather than constitutional) reasoning. I wrote about this separately, but it was an aside.
The government will not reveal or take responsibility. Why block the entire account in advance? Is the account itself illegal? People don’t bother asking these questions because fewer people ask them today than they did two years ago. As its move toward total power becomes threatening, it demands higher levels of social compliance. Either through discipline, discouragement or indoctrination. This is not surprising, but what is really distressing are the vicious comments directed at farmers on social media. How easy is it to forget the nearly 750 protesters who lost their lives? Have we as a society lost all civility because of our divisions?
