Justice Department files antitrust lawsuit against Apple

The U.S. Department of Justice and more than a dozen states have filed a lawsuit against Apple in U.S. federal court, accusing the company of violating antitrust laws. The report states that Apple’s hardware and software products are largely unavailable to rivals, making it difficult for rivals to compete and for customers to switch to other companies’ products.

Previously, the European Commission fined Apple 1.8 billion euros ($1.95 billion) for preventing music streaming developers from “notifying iOS users of alternative and cheaper music subscription services available outside the App Store.” At the same time, U.S. lawmakers are pursuing TikTok, another technology company, with great enthusiasm.

The U.S. Department of Justice recommended that Apple use its control over iOS to block the public’s use of innovative apps and cloud streaming services. (Look at cloud gaming services like Google’s now-defunct Stadia and Microsoft’s xCloud). The lawsuit also alleges that Apple blocks rival payment platforms, makes it harder for Android messages to appear on iPhones and limits the integration of rival smartphones with iOS devices.

you Can Compare Apple’s antitrust suit to the one Microsoft filed against Windows in the late ’90s — even Attorney General Merrick Garland pointed out what was in the suit. But Microsoft really PC software dominated at the time, with more than 90% of PCs running some version of Windows.

The U.S. Department of Justice says Apple accounts for 70% of all smartphones, and that number is even less. Outside of the US (getting a bit academic here), Apple has the same market share as Samsung, with many other phone makers fighting for a percentage point or two. This isn’t quite the same as Microsoft’s control of PCs.

Two devices that were conspicuously missing from last fall’s Microsoft Surface and AI event are finally here — and they’re in line with our expectations, but also a bit surprising. Today, Microsoft launched Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6, which feature the same design as previous models but now feature the AI intelligence of Intel’s new Core Ultra CPUs. Alas, both have the ominous word “commercial” in their names, so you can only buy them from Microsoft’s website or commercial resellers. but why? We really don’t know.

DoorDash just announced the launch of a new drone delivery pilot program in Christiansburg, Virginia, population 22,000. The company says orders should arrive in 30 minutes or less, making the high-flying drones about as fast as standard pizza delivery. However, it is limited to “eligible items.” And, alas, there are only items from fast-food chain Wendy’s.

Nearly two decades after its debut, Reddit is now a publicly traded company. The company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker RDDT on Thursday, with mascot Snoo ringing the opening bell himself. One interesting aspect of Reddit’s IPO is that it has offered shares to long-term users in good standing at IPO pricing over the past few weeks. It’s not all good news for Reddit, though. It recently signed a deal with Google, reportedly worth $60 million per year, to train the latter’s artificial intelligence models based on user-generated content. The Federal Trade Commission is studying the arrangement.
